As the weather changes in the Autumn, it is a good time to give your Koi or goldfish pond a little bit of attention to make sure it goes into the winter months in top condition. Ideally you should prevent leaves and debris from falling into the pond and causing pollution, this can be done with a simple cover net. Alternatively, you can collect leaves with a floating pond skimmer, or if you're on hand you can use a skimmer net to remove the debris. As the pond plants die back remove the dead flowers and leaves so that they don't sink to the bottom of the pond as this will also pollute the water. If you haven't had a chance to collect the waste before it falls, then you can vacuum the waste out with a pond vacuum.

With the dropping pond temperature, the nutrients your fish require from their food changes and so you should start feeding them Wheatgerm. A floating thermometer will also help you keep an eye on the temperature, so you know when to feed the fish.
